Preventing Fire Hazards: Lessons from Recent Incidents in Dhaka

In recent years, incidents of fire have become increasingly common in densely populated areas of Bangladesh, with the latest being the Gulshan fire that took place on February 19, 2023. While the cause of the fire is yet to be identified, the tragic incident resulted in the loss of one life and several injuries. The incident should serve as a reminder that proper measures need to be put in place to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.

One of the most significant factors that contribute to these incidents is the lack of awareness about fire safety measures. Many residents are unaware of how to prevent fires or how to respond to them in case of an emergency. This is why it is important to educate people about fire safety and provide training to them, so they can respond effectively in case of a fire emergency.

Another issue that exacerbates the problem is the lack of proper infrastructure and equipment. Inadequate firefighting facilities and resources lead to delays in extinguishing the fire, which can result in more severe damage and loss of life. Firefighting teams must have access to the necessary equipment, such as fire engines, ladders, hoses, and other resources that can help them control the fire as quickly as possible.

In addition, there needs to be strict implementation of building codes and regulations. Many buildings in densely populated areas of Bangladesh are constructed without taking fire safety measures into consideration. This means that buildings do not have the necessary infrastructure in place to prevent fires or control them if they occur. There should be strict adherence to building codes and regulations to ensure that buildings are constructed with fire safety in mind.

Moreover, the government must take proactive measures to ensure the safety of its citizens. The Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (BFSCD) should be provided with adequate resources and personnel to ensure that they can respond effectively in the event of a fire emergency. The government must also increase funding for the BFSCD, so they can conduct fire safety awareness campaigns, trainings, and drills to ensure that citizens are aware of how to prevent and respond to fires.

In conclusion, the recent Gulshan fire incident is a tragic reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in densely populated areas of Bangladesh. The government and other relevant stakeholders must take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Strict implementation of building codes, proper infrastructure and equipment, fire safety training and awareness, and increased government funding for fire services are some of the measures that can be taken to ensure the safety of citizens.
